Preparing training modules based on Signposts

An EWC expert group has adapted the Council of Europe publication Signposts so that it can be used in teacher training.


The expert group has worked their way through Signposts chapter by chapter. They have identified the key points and the controversial issues raised in each chapter, how they are relevant for teachers in religious education and highlighted the relevant Competences of Democratic Culture (CDC)

Based on the findings, the expert group has developed activities that deal with these key points and controversies. Finally, they have drafted guiding notes that explain how to carry out teacher trainings with Signposts as a manual.

“The next stage should be to pilot the material by disseminating it through teacher trainers. In this way, we can get feedback on how it is to use it in a local context”, says Angelos Vallianatos, who has led the expert group.

In addition to Angelos Vallianatos, the expert group consists of Astrit Dautaj, John Harald Bondevik, Kevin O’Grady, Jennie Holck-Clausen and Ana Perona-Fjeldstad.

EWC and CoE published Signposts – Policy and Practice for teaching about religions and non-religious worldviews in intercultural education in 2014. Signposts gives practical advice to policy makers, education professionals in schools and teacher trainers on how the study of religions and non-religious convictions can contribute to intercultural education in schools in Europe.

Signposts is a result of the work carried out by a joint CoE-EWC expert group that was set up to look into issues which were important to consider for member states in order to implement the Recommendation CM/Rec(2008)12 on the dimension of religions and non-religious convictions within intercultural education. It was written by Robert Jackson.
