Thorbjørn Jagland expressed support for EWC

Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Mr. Thorbjørn Jagland, expressed strong support for the work of the European Wergeland Centre in implementing Council of Europe policies to practice in nearly 30 member states during a visit to the center last week.

EWC was established by Norway and the Council of Europe in 2008 and has since then been a privileged partner of the Council of Europe in the field of Education for Democracy and Human Rights.

During his visit at the Centre, Jagland got an overview of the work EWC does to implement Council of Europe policies like the Framework for Competences for Democratic Culture (CDC) as well as the promotion of Council of Europe resources like the manuals Teaching Controversial Issues and Managing Controversy. EWC is for example currently working with the five Nordic Ministries of Education in the project Teaching Controversial Issues in the Nordic Countries.

EWC also presented the work the Centre does to support curricula and school reform in Ukraine as well as the Learning Democracy at Utøya programme.
